TREDFOR

Theology of the Body

Reflection - Patrick Gerard Gotanco

The seminar was a great reminder of things that I thought I already know but also it helped me appreciate more how important the body is and that it shouldnt be abused. I think that people these days including myself are too focused on the pleasures of the body rather than the spiritual significance of it to the Holy Trinity. Before I thought of sex as just something for fun and to a certain extent it had some malice but after the seminar I now believe that every single sexual act is justified as long as it is not abusive and glorified.

The seminar allowed me to realized a few interesting things about sexuality and how to view love in a different way. I grew up knowing that discussing the private parts as rude and unethical but who knew you could view it in such a manner that is void of any form of malice. In the end they are still part of us and they usually represent our how we truly feel. I also realized that malice is usually only there if we abuse the things we do such as sex and misunderstanding what love truly is.

Interview:
Interviewee: Br Michael Broughton FSC

Interview

    Q.    Is it fulfilling to be a brother at DLSU? How so?
    A.    It is fulfilling because I get to enjoy seeing young students develop into well mannered individuals
    Q.    Being a brother how do you cope with being single all your life?
    A.    Well I chose this direction for my life so I knew what I was getting myself  into and it is a privilege to serve God in this manner so I am happy with it.
    Q.    How has being a brother influenced your outlook on life
    A.    I think that everybody at some point in their lives comes to a point where they just stop for a moment and take a good look at who they are and what they have done so far in their lives, so

The interview on Br. Michael enlightened me on some things concerning the way brothers live. The above is a summary of the interview but through out the entire interview, he has shared a lot of his experience such as the things he had to give up for his position. But compared to fathers, they did have some freedom in terms of actions. But in the end, he did tell us that the most important thing when it came to choosing vocations. We should always enjoy the one we choose because it'll lead the rest of our lives forever. I believe in this because we're the ones who makes the choices for our lives and the importance it holds could truly hold a difference for our futures.

Synopsis:

Patrick Gerard Gotanco

Throughout TREDFOR we discussed the values needed to sustain or achieve a great marriage and that these values should also be instilled in the future generations so that they may do the same. There were several things that we re-learned about marriage, like family planning which involves managing the budget of the family for example whether the husband or the wife will manage the finances of the couple. We discussed about the different things that we look forward to when we get married which were sex, having a family, independence, having a car, a house, etc. basically the essentials I also think that the values that we all should instill in ourselves were also discussed like being patient with our spouse if ever we get married. The films that we watched including “I Do” showed that it is not good to rush things especially if we're young and even if we think that we are in love, I think in the movie that the girl was just going through a phase where she thinks that everything she feels controls her life and I think that we could all relate to the story. The other movie that we watch was the one about the brothers including DLSU's very own Bro. Armind Luistro, he showed the same dedication that our founding father St. La Salle showed throughout his time serving and teaching people.

TREDFOR has thought me a lot of things when it came to life. And to be honest I truly enjoyed it. I may have been lazy from time to time, but I did learn a lot. From the things concerning marriage, the foundation of understanding what love truly meant, and the things that influenced who we are now and what we could be tomorrow.

My favorite topic to be honest was the one about mutual empathy. I have always held friendships and relationships in high regards. To me they are the most important things. And to learn that there might be ways that people interact with each other that we can't normally see or understand. These interactions are usually the way they show other people their feelings or what they truly mean to them. This made me appreciate them a lot more and made me a little bit more conscious about how I my self interact with these people.
